šŸ’ Quick Thoughts

Okay. So I’ve pruned the Docker configuration, so that’s cleaned things up nicely on my end. Down to 7gb on my local device (from 72).

Now, with regards to Bumble , I did test out upgrading from Godot 4.0 to 4.5 for the garden game project. That does seem to work. I’m going to finish the initial set up, make sure everything runs well in 4.0, and then I’ll make the migration up to 4.5 and we can bundle it inside React Native.

I currently need to reinstall some Supabase dependencies and the current internet speeds on this train from Estonia…not great. So I think I’m going to prioritise working on Godot scenes today.

I’m going to pause things in Godot here for now as I will be arriving in Riga shortly: |

What’s going to improve things going forward? I think we need to focus on heavily simplifying the initial Bumble flow. Not necessarily removing things, but keeping it simple. So things like automation probably won’t work here.

Getting better at Blender would probably be the smart thing to do, but I rarely do the smart thing the first time. So… I really don’t know. Only good thing is there’s no deadlines right now.

šŸ’” Ideas & Brainstorming

There’s probably two or three things we need to look at:

  1. What is the optimal user flow for Bumble for early users?
  2. What are the common threads in games that I will find fun to make and will provide some sort of engagement?

I’m open to producing games that won’t have citizen science appeal, if they’re going to bring in engagement with the overall media suite. Speaking of, we probably need to get onto a digital presence for ā€œScroobl.esā€ in general.

I’m pretty confident that Substack is the way to go for our writing…just need to figure out what to write about (something to discuss with Fred). We can probably do cross-posting to things like Farcaster & Twitter, as a writing platform Substack will be fine in terms of feature set. And if the export capacity is good…then it’s a lock.

Bumble flow

First priority is to design a clean and minimal UI for classification. The current functional flow is great. However, as discussed at length elsewhere, the UI looks out of place compared to the agricultural texture/style of the rest of Bumble.

To get this right, I probably need to first look at when pollination occurs. Having it as a discriminator for ā€œfull growthā€ is probably not the right way to go about things. Firstly, pollination is not required for a plant to grow (just for it to breed). Secondly, it means that there is too much emphasis on the citizen science integration for a core mechanic (arguably one of many, many problems with the Star Sailors UX).

[While writing this, it’s also brought up the point in my mind regarding creating multiple little games and then bringing them into Star Sailors. This could be done in multiple ways, for e.g. creating standalone games and then integrating the graphics and mechanics into the larger SS narrative; treating the whole standalone product as an extension of SS that can be directly slotted in, etc. This does provide some interesting scenarios where we can even make more character or novel-centric games. But I’ll wait until I can finally meet with Fred again before really trying to delve into this further. For the most part I feel relatively content when working on Bumble and Godot and if Decen does end up working out, then the space itch will probably be settled. Especially when uni starts. The priority has to be getting things out there that get noticed].

One proposal that [potentially] has merit is that citizen science actions should be treated as providing a bonus. E.g. it produces a higher yield of seeds/produce because ā€œmore pollinationā€ occurs (to put it simply). This doesn’t work when the mechanic relies on entities from the classification (e.g. planet hunting), but you don’t need to know about bee types to grow corn (in Bumble).

So I think the first thing to do is to take the classification process out of Bumble entirely. Or at least, the growth process.

Puzzle games? -You have to organise crops in optimal patterns for them to grow? Weather affects this? Pollination produces stronger plants? Or unlocks more plots? -Every day the pollinators in your hives get released, classifications produce something… (but what’s the narrative for how classifying the types of pollinators in your ā€˜garden’ provide a tangible benefit?)

I think providing different maps is a good idea, we can start with different biomes which will provide weather presets (no API calls - we’ll use predefined averages), maybe different soil & grass colours, etc. Provides that initial link to the main Star-Sailors game…however I don’t think I’m going to build that in from the start.

I think that we should also have it create a guest account automatically when you install the app, if there’s an option to connect/merge a guest account with an existing account later, then that’s a no brainer - that means everyone is covered. All we’d then need is a script that removes guest accounts locally that are >1 day old, as whenever I run the simulator it will obviously keep logging me out :P. (Actually, on that - can we preview the simulator in VSCode so I don’t have to keep reorganising my windows?)

Getting eas to build locally, consistently, is the way to go.

ADL/GPDL is dependant on ChopDot continuing, if we don’t continue, then I’ll probably have to register a business in Eestee and wait until everything gets sorted out financially before I can apply for the licenses on my own.

Next step is to figure out how the hives are populated, that creates a source for pollination events. I’ll draw out some ideas for this tomorrow (at whatever cafe I end up going to first, lol) and some other ideas for longer-term mechanics and other ideas - whether we end up doing some stuff in client repo again, or maintain multiple Godot/RN projects…
